I decided I wanted to have a post after the first night of the DNC in Philly. This was driven by some of the speeches and actions held at the convention yesterday. The start of this week long event was filled with lots of controversy. First the reveal of the emails from the DNC who, as we all expected, had been exchanging emails and plans to figure out ways to derail Bernie Sanders campaign. This release of over 20,000 emails contained some very disgusting tactics that I thought, not even the most corrupt of the Democrats would never consider. But needless to say I was wrong. There was talks about how they would not talk with Bernie supporters, for risk of "punching them in the face", or the idea they may want to bring his faith into question to try to win states. Not much about the idea that even all the way at the top, Debbie Wasserman Schultz(DWS) herself was in on the Bernie trash-talk. The DNC had done as much as they could, from scheduling debates on nights to hide Bernie, or to the voter suppression tactics they resorted to. To be fair, these emails do Not confirm those malicious attacks, but their obvious distaste for 1 particular candidate was VERY apparent. I will say everyone can have their opinions, but it is LITERALLY the entire purpose of the DNC to be an objective entity that just lets the people decide on candidates. That was obviously discarded. Needless to say, there was backlash from Bernie supporters at the convention.
To start the day DWS was booed out of her own Florida delegates meeting. She immediately stepped down after the convention and decided not to talk at the convention. Then, in what I would consider a COMPLETE slap in the face of Bernie supporters, less than a day of this news she added DWS to her campaign group. I mean I guess she did owe her... Either way I am not sure I know whether the influence of Debbie, or anyone else at the DNC truly made so much of a difference to have Bernie win the nomination, but I am 100% certain they did in fact influence it. This primary will go down with an asterisk. It is these types of behind the scenes deals that has driven the country into the hands of a psychotic man, Trump. People hate these powerful people deciding and colluding with one another for favors, or money, or positions. It was a very bad thing to have happened, and somewhat idiotic of Hillary to immediately add DWS to her campaign. She may still believe she doesn't need the Bernie supporters, but polls have her OFFICIALLY losing to Trump in country wide polls. These are scary times.
The boos continued at the conference itself. The temporary replacement for the convention was booed immediately. For the first few hours any time Hillary's name was brought up there was significant boos from the crowd. This was not the so called "unified Party" we were being sold prior to the event. Obviously the emails exasperated this issue. The night continued with some pretty boring speeches, and others that were quite well done, for the most part. The problem that may come up at the end of this conference is that multiple speakers used their speeches to sometimes jab those Bernie supporters who had not fully jumped in, or as some might say "sold-out", to support the presumptive nominee. They did these jabs in their face, and let me tell you, "don't poke the bear!" Michele Obama had a great speech with lots of positive messaging. She also took a stab though, and it was not exclusively positive reaction. Overall her message was good and strong favor for Hillary. Elizabeth Warren also had some of her great work of hitting Trump with the facts of his corrupt business policies. She also then spent some of her speech trying to sell Hillary as a true progressive, and my fear is it may have fallen on deaf ears. The people she was trying to convince are not sold on the idea that now, after all the money she has received, after taking a VP candidate who is also a HUGE recipient of bank money, is EVER going to try to reign in Wall-street. That is not something the people are going to buy that easy. She also tried to sell Hillary as fighting to remove money out of politics, also seems unlikely and did not sit well with some onlookers.
Bernie also spoke last night. He gave the same type of rousing speech that have made him one of the most likable and trusted people in politics. He was authentic, and very passionate. He also had to try to sell Hillary. I do believe it was his best attempt yet. In the end he reminded the changed to the platform were some of his biggest issues. He also made it clear they don't agree on everything. Now the platform may not be huge, considering it was also on the platform last time to reverse Citizens United, and no one ever even tried to push it. So there is not some magical concession and everything is OK now. I listened to him and did feel the passion I had felt. I may not buy that Hillary cares, or will attempt to fight for these issues, but his willing to try to make sure that in the end Hillary is still 1000000000x better than a man who will likely lead our country into war and poverty.
This was an interesting night to say the least. The positives were apparent though. The videos they had were some great ads that will help expose Trump for the liar and cheat he is. They were clever and much better produced than anything seen at the RNC. It was a night that did revolve around an idea of Hope. This push for love and optimism was something in stark contrast from the RNC last week. These 2 conventions will be driven by Fear vs Hope. It will be an interesting week as it keeps unfolding. Hopefully there will be a rise in Hillary's polling from this point on. The message has been that she needs to be elected at all costs to prevent Trump, of course the irony is that Bernie was/IS a FAR more electable candidate per the facts we can investigate. Can they convince the Bernie or Bust movement to end? That will be the question for who may be our next president.
