Tuesday in New York was a very disappointing day for Bernie Sanders. I, along with his camp, really thought there was a chance of having the race being, at minimum, pretty close and only a few percentage behind the Hilary regime. Gloomily, that was not the case. In another complete breakdown from the Democratic Party, we saw another sad state like Arizona with TERRIBLE voter suppression. The hours for voting were cut in half for a lot of the state, most of which were heavily in Bernie Sanders camp. There are no excuses, but the fact that the Democratic Party is allowing these elections in Arizona and New York, the only last 2 states to favor Hilary over Bernie, have been a “complete mess”, to quote the incompetent Trump. I am willing to say, the odds now of a Bernie Sanders presidential run are now looking almost impossible. I will be here watching and hoping, but my expectations of the people to elect someone who actually fights for THEM seem to be squashed. My pessimism has returned for the future of our country. I will remind people though, I will support Hilary as the nominee to the extent of, she is at least not terrifying for the existence of our country.
Now that I have some of that pessimism out of my system, I look forward. On a personal level I believe I owe a lot of thanks to Bernie Sanders and to The Young Turks; as they have opened my eyes and encouraged me to do more investigation into my own beliefs, and politics in general. It has been a somewhat stressful time over these last 6+ months, as I knew I was supporting the long shot. Though we got closer and closer, it does not seem like there will be a chance to overcome the establishment this time around.
Now looking forward the question is, are we ever going to see progressive change? This whole revolution was about getting a progressive true left liberal to start the changes inside our government. That goal will now need to be altered. It now seems unlikely that we will get any change from the post of President. Then how do we start the push for real change? We need to now work on looking into those politicians at the state level, and at the US Congress level. I am honored and blessed to live in a state with one of the top progressives in the country, Keith Ellison. He is the first ever Muslim politician in the US Congress. People like Elizabeth Warren, who I hope will be the President of this country in 2025. I encourage all people to go out and start searching your districts for those who are real progressives. Those are the people we will now need to support to work the progress into the middle of our government. At the state level there will also need to be a push for real progressives. The real fact of the matter is, that our lives are most effected by laws passed within our own state and less on the national stage.
We tried the top down approach to fixing our government to start ACTUALLY working for us instead of the rich, and that goal may have finally been subdued. Now the efforts must be to push from the bottom up. Organizations like WOLF-PAC exist to help push money out of politics. It is a hard and harsh road to go, but that is the way of revolutions. The future can look brighter, because when the numbers are shown, it is obvious the next generation of young people are as progressive as they ever have been. Bernie has had most states lead in the 18-29yo range by upwards of 70%+ of the votes. Those are HUGE numbers and if this setback is not enough to disenfranchise them from the political process, hopefully they/I will keep pushing forward and make our country work for the People not the corporations.
I know that we now stand for a presidency that will most likely lead to another 8 years of “same old same old.” Now I will not say we are in some terrible place. Though I will continue to hope that the future will be brighter as we push back against the money running our government. I hope that the future brings a person not willing to be conservative when it comes to money in politics and the influence of that money. The right leaning neoliberals that flood the Democratic Party. They want to have some public policy change, but willing to concede all economic policies to achieve it. These same liberals willing to support failing war mongering policies that are pushed by the Military suppliers to make endless amounts of money. These policies not only not helping our fight against the terrorists but those that help them grow stronger by disenfranchising an entire religion and region of people. I want a world and a country I am proud to live in. One that puts the Peoples’ lives ahead of the wealthy. One that wants actual equality of human rights and freedoms. One that pursues peace and unity among the world. May now be another 8+ years away, but if there was ever a time to think that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it is now. I am a progressive! I hope you join the fight for real change.
