I have a response to the Facebook post that seems to keep circulating around about BLM disrupting the airport last week. The post essentially makes the claim that it hurts the cause of BLM by making more people, who may have been neutral, go to being against the movement and more upset at black people.
I will concede that no doubt the reaction will have that effect. I do believe people are self-obsessed and only really care about the conveniences of their lives. Yes I get military and family members who did not cause the chaos that exists were trying to just go through their lives at the airport. It also sucks that some people who actually support the cause and are not racist were also affected. I know it makes me mad when people do stuff that interferes with my normal way of life, because my way is simple.
I will also ask that each of you who complain about the act think about it for a simple minute. Yes, they made life more inconvenient on one day of the year. Yes, they had a protest that affected a large amount of people. Yes, some people will just react negatively to being bothered. But think about it this way. They did this act to make life a little harder to go to and leave an airport… They didn’t shoot up a mall… They didn’t shoot up a Planned Parenthood… They didn’t attack a police station… They just made it tough on you for 1 day. A small moment in time where your Privileged life would have to take a back seat. 1 day that you weren’t able to enjoy all of the easiness of being White. Society is AGAINST black people in our country, EVERY DAY! Every day they lose jobs to white people. Every day they deal with Police shootings, a significant portion unarmed. Every day they are judged and called thugs. Every day many live in poverty. They have to deal with the inconveniences of life as it is now EVERY DAY. You had 1 day of issue.
I am not saying the idea was perfect, because like I stated I do believe people won’t actually stop and think about what the message they were actually trying to get across is. I know it will have the negative affect of more white people hating black people. So it may not be the most productive thing that could be done. But FINALLY people are forced to at least experience and talk about the issue. It IS an issue. Racism is ingrained in our society. I don’t have any answers, which is for someone much smarter than I, but I will say I acknowledge that what BLM did should be a wakeup call that we have an issue. We should not ignore it anymore. We should care and have equal respect and rights to all people. Thank you for taking the time to get through the whole post. I am sure not many people will. I stand with #blacklivesmatter
